Book Review : The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins

Mike Hege

Context: Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the Compass Retreat and meet Mel Robbins in person. Mel is the author of a fantastic book called "The Five Second Rule," which teaches how to change your life in just five seconds. The book explores the idea that we only have so much time in life and encourages readers to consider whether they are living the life they want. Mel talks about the courage it takes to push forward and make changes in your life, and offers a hack for implementing these changes in just five seconds. The hack involves recognizing the five-second window between having a thought and taking action. Oftentimes, we tend to overthink things and hesitate before taking action, but the five-second rule encourages us to recognize this delay and act on our thoughts immediately.

Mel talks about activation energy, which is the energy it takes to start a chemical reaction, and how this energy can be harnessed to make positive changes in our lives. If you're interested in trying out the five-second rule, Mel recommends counting down from five to one and replacing the words "I'm nervous" with "I'm excited" and smiling. I'm curious to know if this technique will work for you, so feel free to leave a comment below. Overall, I highly recommend checking out Mel Robbins and "The Five Second Rule" – it has the potential to truly change your life.
